My Approach

Therapy rooted in
genuine understanding

I believe healing becomes possible when you feel truly safe, seen, and heard. My work is built on that foundation — and shaped by a life of curiosity about what it means to be human.

A path shaped by people and places

I’ve been in private practice since 2001, working with adults, adolescents, and couples across a wide range of concerns — depression, anxiety, trauma, and the complex challenges of relationships.

My path into psychology was shaped not only by formal training but by life itself. After graduating from Cornell University, I spent three years in the Peace Corps in the Philippines, followed by extended time in Japan, China, and Taiwan. Living and working across these cultures gave me a profound appreciation for the diversity of human experience — and a humility that continues to inform how I listen and how I help.

I later completed my Master’s in Social Work at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and went on to earn my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Over the years I’ve woven together psychodynamic, cognitive, relational, and mindfulness-based perspectives — not as a fixed formula, but as a flexible toolkit shaped to each person I work with.

What I believe about meaningful change

1
Safety first
Change can only happen when you feel genuinely safe. My first priority is creating a space where you're not performing wellness — you're actually experiencing it.
2
You are the expert on you
I bring clinical knowledge and perspective; you bring the expertise of your own lived experience. Good therapy is a true collaboration between the two.
3
Curiosity over judgment
I approach every person — and every part of a person — with genuine curiosity. Whatever you bring, curiosity is where I begin.
4
Depth over symptom management
While I absolutely address symptoms, I'm most interested in understanding what's underneath them — because that's where lasting change lives.
5
Context matters
You are a whole person shaped by culture, history, relationships, and circumstances. I never reduce you to a diagnosis or a checklist.
6
Therapy is about knowing yourself
At its core, therapy isn't just about solving problems — it's about developing a deeper, more compassionate relationship with yourself and those you love.

A flexible, integrative toolkit

No single approach fits every person. I draw on a range of evidence-based methods and weave them together in whatever way best serves you.

Psychodynamic Therapy
Exploring how past experiences and unconscious patterns shape your present emotions, relationships, and choices.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Identifying and reshaping unhelpful thought patterns to create meaningful shifts in mood and behavior.
Mindfulness-Based Approaches
Developing present-moment awareness to reduce reactivity, manage stress, and cultivate inner stability.
Relational Therapy
Using the therapeutic relationship itself as a lens for understanding and improving how you connect with others.
Trauma-Informed Care
A gentle, paced approach that recognizes how trauma lives in the body and relationships — and how healing unfolds from safety.
Cross-Cultural Sensitivity
Shaped by years living across cultures, I bring genuine appreciation for how identity, background, and community intersect with wellbeing.
"Therapy is not just about solving problems — it is about developing a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships."
— Lyle Herman, Psy.D.
