Anxiety is a normal part of living. Unfortunately, for many people it gets in the way of the quality of life. Whether you're having a brief situational anxious reaction to changes going on in your life, chronic general anxiety or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or panic attacks, there are many effective ways to treat these conditions.
Many of the approaches have to do with cognitive psychology as seen here and benefit can also be found in various other modes of therapy including psychodynamically-based therapies.
A common component of many of these therapies is an intense focus on confronting the fears. Gradual exposure techniques, for example, would have you slowly exposing yourself to limited and then increasingly anxiety-provoking forms of whatever your specific fear or phobia might be. Cognitive reprocessing, a technique often used to treat PTSD also would have us exploring the trauma repeatedly and in detail to reduce, and eventually eliminate its emotional charge. Anxiety and fear are ancient aspects of human life but in our modern society, they don't have to interfere too much with our ability to enjoy a peaceful and satisfying life. Please give me a call and we can talk about how psychotherapy can help.
